Pasupatheeswarar Temple, Thiruvamur, Cuddalore
Pasupatheeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thiruvamur Village near Panruti in Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Pasupatheeswarar and Mother is called as Thirupurasundari. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of Kedilam River. The Temple has been mentioned in the hymns of Appar. Hence this temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam. Thiruvamur is the Avathara Sthalam of Thirunavukkarasar (Appar). Saint Arunagirinathar had sung his Thirupugazh Hymns on Lord Murugan of this Temple.




History
The Temple is believed to be around 2000 years old. The Temple has been renovated by Kulothunga Chola III. 




The Temple
This is an east facing temple built in the birthplace of Appar (Thirunavukkarasar). Presiding Deity is called as Pasupatheeswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam facing east. Lord is a Swayambu Moorthy. Statue of Thirunavukkarasar can be found opposite to the sanctum in standing posture worshipping the Lord. There are shrines for his sister Thilagavathy, his father Pugazhanar and his Mother Mathini in the Temple premises.




Mother is called as Thirupurasundari and she is facing south. There are shrines for Mahalakshmi, Sidhi Vinayakar, Chandra, Surya, Appar, Dakshinamurthy, Lakshminarayana Perumal, Brahma, Chandikeswarar, Durga Navagrahas, Srivelamuktheeswarar. Sthala Vriksham is Kondrai. Theertham associated with this Temple is Kedilam. Birthplace of Thirunavukkarasar is situated to the south west of this Temple. His house is still available in the form of a Temple.




Temple Opening Time
The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.00 PM to 09.00 PM.
Festivals
Appar Guru Pooja on Chithirai Sadayam and Avathara day on Panguni Chithirai are the festivals celebrated here with much fanfare.
Singers
The Temple did not have separate Devara Pathigams but his “Pasupathi Thiruvirutham” hymns was sung on this Lord only. Hence this Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam. The glory of this Temple has been mentioned in Periya Puranam written by Sekkizhar. Saint Arunagirinathar had sung his Thirupugazh Hymns on Lord Murugan of this Temple.
