Legends
Tharangam means waves and Paadi means house in Tamil. As the place is located on the sea side, the place came to be called as Tharangambadi (House of waves). The place was also called as Sadangan Paadi (Sadangan means Lord Shiva & Paadi means house). Later got corrupted to Tharangampadi.
History
The temple was built in 1305 CE by Pandyan King Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan as per the inscription available in the temple. This inscription is dated to the 37th regnal year of Pandyan King Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan. Lord Shiva was mentioned as Sadanganpaadiyana Kulasekara Pattinathu Udaiyar Manivanneeswaramudaiyar in this inscription. Tharangampadi was called as Kulasekara Pattinam during the reign of Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan. An inscription of Pandyan King Veerapandya dating back to 1354 CE can be found in this temple.
An
unfinished inscription dated to 1614 CE belonged to Thanjavur Nayak King
Achyutappa Nayaka was found in this temple. Lord Shiva was called as Masilamani
Nathar for the first time in this inscription, but the place remained called as
Sadanganpadi. During Dutch rule, they found very difficult to pronounce Sadanganpadi.
So, they named the place as Tranquebar. The temple was completely ruined due to
vagaries of time and rising sea levels. The sanctum and few subsidiary shrines
remains intact. A new temple was constructed, and consecration was done on
2013.
