Palani Murugan Temple – The Temple
Dhandayuthapani Temple can be accessed by four different
ways. Pilgrims climb the 693 steps, or take the elephant path. The winch
and rope car are modern contrivances that get you to the top of the hill much
faster.
Dhandayuthapani Temple’s gopuram or magnificent tower is
famous. The deity, Dhandayuthapani Swami refers to the god carrying a staff in
his hand. The figure seems to suggest renunciation as the deity wears just a
loincloth. The impression formed is that the deity is advocating the precept
'Renounce all to reach me'. The icon is unique in the whole world.
The Tiruvavinankudi Temple, the original one, is at the
Adivaram or foothills. Lord Muruga rested here for a while before going up the
hill. The deity can be accessed only by the hereditary temple priests.
The Panchamirtham, made from five materials like
molasses and fruits, is a kind of jam that is delicious and has a long shelf
life. Do pick up some if you are here. The Viboothi or aromatic sacred ash is also
highly regarded, and as a blessing, is applied to sick people for a quick cure
from ailments.
