Marundeeswarar Temple, Thirukachur, Chengalpattu

Marundeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thirukachur Village near Singapperumal Koil in Chengalpattu Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Marundeeswarar / Oushadheeshwar and Mother is called as Irulneeki Thayar / Anthakaara Nivarani. This temple is also called as Malai Koil (Hill Temple) by the villagers. This temple is considered as one of Sakthi Peethas (Oushadha Peedam). This Temple along with the Kachabeswarar Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva Sthalams) glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems. This Temple is considered as the 26th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Nadu.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 8th century CE. The Temple was converted to granite structure in 11th century CE by Kulothunga Chola I (1070 – 1122 CE). The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Prayers

Devotees pray to Lord Shiva for relief from Brahmmahathi dosha, pitru dosha and for healthy life. Devotees pray to Mother Parvathy seeking good vision & cure from eye troubles and relief from planetary effects. There is a small pit near Dhwaja Sthambam filled with mud. This mud is considered sacred and medicinal, which devotees apply on their forehead like Vibhuthi. Devotees believe that swallowing a lit bit of this sand can cure all kinds of illnesses.

Farmers from nearby villages take this sand and sprinkle it in their fields to obtain a better yield. Devotees perform honey abishekam to Brahma Chandikeswarar for nine weeks continuously to realise their wishes and remove hurdles in their endeavours. Those aspiring excellence in arts pray to Lord Thala Moola Vinayaka.
