Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Kanchipuram – Literary Mention

Nalayira Divya Prabandham:

The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7^th – 9^th century CE Vaishnava canon. The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the book. Lord Varadaraja Perumal of this temple was praised by Thirumangai Alwar in 4 pasurams, by Bhoothath Alwar in 2 pasurams and by Peyalvar in one Pasuram. There is a belief that Lord Varadaraja is the god referred to by Nammalvar in his Thiruvaai Mozhi.

கல்லார்மதிள்சூழ்கச்சிநகருள்நச்சிப், பாடகத்துள்

பிண்டியார்மண்டையேந்திப் பிறர்மனைதிரிதந்துண்ம் 
முண்டியான் சாபம்தீர்த்த ஒருவனூர் உலகமேத்தும் 
கண்டியூர்அரங்கம்மெய்யம் கச்சிபேர்மல்லையென்று 
மண்டினார் உய்யலல்லால் மற்றையார்க்கு உய்யலாமே

2060:

வங்கத்தால்மாமணிவந்துந்துமுந்நீர் 
மல்லையாய்! மதிள்கச்சியூராய்! பேராய்! 
கொங்கத்தார்வளங்கொன்றையலங்கல்மார்வன் 
குலவரையன்மடப்பாவைஇடப்பால்கொண்டான் 
பங்கத்தாய்! பாற்கடலாய்! பாரின்மேலாய்! 
பனிவரையினுச்சியாய்! பவளவண்ணா! 
எங்குற்றாய்? எம்பெருமான்! உன்னைநாடி 
ஏழையேன்இங்ஙனமேஉழிதருகேனே.

கல்லுயர்ந்தநெடுமதிள்சூழ்கச்சிமேய 
களிறு! என்றும் கடல்கிடந்தகனியே! என்றும்
அல்லியம்பூமலர்ப்பொய்கைப்பழனவேலி 
அணியழுந்தூர்நின்றுகந்தஅம்மான்! என்றும்
சொல்லுயர்ந்தநெடுவீணைமுலைமேல்தாங்கித் 
தூமுறுவல்நகைஇறையேதோன்றநக்கு 
மெல்விரல்கள்சிவப்பெய்தத்தடவிஆங்கே

Koorathazhwar Hymns on Varadaraja Perumal & Perundevi Thayar:

Koorathazhwar composed Sri Varadaraja Stavam in praise of Lord Varadaraja Perumal of this temple and Sri Sthuthi in praise of Goddess Perundevi Thayar of this temple. It is said that huge sum of gold coins fell from sky in order to acknowledge his works.

Varadaraja Panchasath:

Varadaraja Panchasath was written by Vedanta Desika, the revered acharya next only to Ramanuja. He mentions about the annual ten day festival celebrated in May.

In one of the verses, he praises the deity as;

"He is the single root-source for this entire universe,

Beginning with space, and all other elements;

Like the pupil in the eye of the Vedas."

Thirtha Prabandha:

The temple finds mention in the Thirtha Prabandha, a travelogue with descriptions of pilgrim centres throughout India written by Sri Vadiraja Swamy.

Devaraja Ashtakam:

Thirukkachi Nambikal composed Devaraja Ashtakam (a Sanskrit poem of 8 verses) on the presiding deity. 

Devaraja Mangalam:

Manavala Mamunigal composed Devaraja Mangalam in praise of Lord Varadharaja Perumal.

Musical Compositions:

Thyagaraja, and Muthuswami Dikshitar, the celebrated composers of the 18^th century created compositions on Varadaraja Perumal. Sri Alluri Venkatadri Swamigal composed more than 200 Keerthanas on Varadaraja Perumal.
