Legends
Sage
Markandeya destined with a short life span of just 16 years, was on a
pilgrimage to Shiva temples praying for longer life. He was at Lord
Amirthakadeswarar temple at Thirukkadaiyur exactly on the last day of his life
embracing the Lord. Lord Yama waved his rope to take Markandeya’s
life. The rope fell on the Lord Shivalinga. Furious Shiva tossed Yama
with his left leg. Realizing his folly, Yama made a linga at this place
where he fell and sought Lord’s pardon. Granting his request, Lord
reinstated him in the job. Also as requested by Yama, Lord stayed in this
place with the name Emaneswaram Udayar.
