Swayambeeswarar Temple, Illalur, Chengalpattu

Swayambeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Illalur Village in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Swayambeeswarar and Mother is called as Karpagambal.


The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. The temple consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. Nandi and Balipeedam can be seen in the mukha mandapam, facing towards the sanctum. Presiding deity is called as Swayambeeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested). The ancient lingam is said to be a Maragatha Lingam and was stolen in July 2017.


Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Karpagambal. There is a shrine for Navagrahas in the temple premises. The temple tank is situated next to the temple.

Festivals

Shivarathri, Aippasi Annabishekam, Karthigai Deepam, Somavaram and Pradoshams are the festivals celebrated here.

Connectivity

The temple is located at about 3.5 Kms from Thiruporur, 4 Kms from Thiruporur Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Kelambakkam, 23 Kms from Chengalpattu and 25 Kms from Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station. The temple is situated at about 3.5 Kms from Thiruporur on Thiruporur to Chengalpattu route.
