Anniyur Agnipureeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Vanniyur in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is called as Agnipureeswarar. His consort is known as Gowri Parvathi. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems. This is the 179th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 62nd Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. The Temple is considered as Parikara Sthalam for Vasthu.

The Temple
Lord Shiva is a Swayambumurthy in this temple. The presiding deity is called as Agnipureeswarar. His consort is known as Gowri Parvathi. Of the Panchamurthis in the temple, the Somaskanda Murthi looks very beautiful. The shrine for the four Saivite saints known as Nalvar is located in the front mandapam. Ambica shrine is on the right. Presiding Lord Shrine is just opposite. Dwarapalakas are sculpted in stone. Sculptures of Saint Appar, Agni, Gowri, a Shivalinga, milking Kamadenu and Vrishabarudar are in line on the walls of sanctum sanctorum. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni and Theertham is Agni Theertham.

The glory of Lord of the temple is praised by Saint Thirunavukkarasar in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 179th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 62nd Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Thirunavukkarasar describes the feature of the deity as:
காலை போய்ப்பலி தேர்வர்கண் ணார்நெற்றி
மேலை வானவர் வந்து விரும்பிய
சோலை சூழ்புறங் காடரங் காகவே
ஆலின் கீழறத் தாரன்னி யூரரே

Agnipureeswarar Temple is located at about 7 Kms from S. Pudur, 3 Kms from Vadamattam, 5 Kms from Konerirajapuram, 18 Kms from Peralam, 4 Kms from Thiruveezhimizhalai, 10 Kms from Serugudi, 12 Kms from Tiruppamburam, 33 Kms from Thiruvarur, 25 Kms from Kumbakonam, 68 Kms from Thanjavur and 130 Kms from Trichy. Town buses are available from Kumbakonam to Anniyur.
From Kumbakonam, take Karaikkal road till S. Pudur and from there, take Konerirajapuram, Vadamattam road. From Vadamattam, Thiru Anniyur is about 3 Kms in the east direction. Autos can be hired from S. Pudur to reach Anniyur. Those who come from Chennai or Puducherry can come up to Peralam. From Peralam, take Thiru Anniyur - Vadamattam road to reach Thiru Anniyur temple.
