Sri Anantheeswarar temple
Sri Anantheeswarar temple is located in Udaiyargudi is a part of Kattumannarkoil town. Kattumannarkoil is well connected to Chidambaram. Sri Anantheeswarar temple is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple was constructed by Paranthaka Chola.
History
The chozha king Rajakesari Aditheyan I had two wives. Rastrakooda Queen’s son Kannara Thevan did not get the kingdom. Paranthakan I son of Pallava Dynasty Queen came to power as chola king in 907 A D and ruled it till 945 A D. He got the titles as veera Chozhan, Veeranarayanan, Irumudi Chozhan and Panditha Vathsalan.
Paranthakan I constructed Sri Anantheeswara Swami Temple at udaiyargudi in 940 A.D. Name of the place was called in general as veeranarayana puram (presently Kattumannar koil) as per Paranthakan’s 33rd year Stone Inscription Kattumannarkoil Region was indicated as Vadakarai Brahmadeyani.
Sundara Chozhan’s mother Veeman Kundavai and Adhithyan Kothai Piratti has Darshan of Anantheeswarar in the 12th year of Sundara chozhan’s regine. (969 AD).
Veeman Kundavai donated lands for performing Abishekam of 1000 pots of water on Makara Sankaranthi Day and Kothai Piratti donated lands for Abishekam of water in 108 pots on the Chirhirai New year Day.
Rajendran I used to say that Anantheeswarar was their family deity (8th year stone Inscription). The stone inscriptions relating to Sri Veeranarayana Perumal Koil also were inscribed in Udaiyargudi Temple as it was in brick construction then. The portion south of Veeranarayanan Lake and east of maduranthaka River (Vadavar) is said to be Veeranarayana Chathur Vedimangalam according to stone Inscriptions.
Because of veeranarayana Chathur vedimangalam was full fertile lands and enough water a fort was constructed on the northern side of Anantheeswara portion. Kandaradithya chozan and Arikula Kesari Stayed in the fort with their troop. This place is called as Kottaimedu now. Chembian Madevi wife of Kandarathithya Chozhan used to go to Anantheeswara Temple daily to worship the deity at that time.
Etymology
