Mannavanur Lake, Mannavanur, Kodaikanal

Mannavanur Lake, Mannavanur, Kodaikanal
This place is 34 kms from Coaker’s Walk in Kodaikanal. One needs to take a diversion on way to pillar rock or Berijam Lake. A signage is provided but can be missed if one is not attentive. The stretch is secluded with almost no or limited vehicle movement. So it is advisable to plan the trip during sunlight. It will take 1.5 hrs to reach this place, 2 hrs or more near the lake and another 1.5 hrs to go back.
It is located near Mannavanur & the main attraction of Mannavanur is the picturesque lake. The lake is bordered by distant hills and you could get the aerial view of this beautiful lake when you drive down to the village. Walking around the lake is the best way to watch birds in this area. The drive to this site is also very interesting as you could see eucalyptus and pine trees on either sides.
This farming village yields a lot of vegetation such as cauliflower, cabbage, peas, potatoes and importantly a lot of carrots. The lake is situated inside a sheep farm. The lush green valley is scattered with flocks of sheep grazing all over the place. There are quite a few benches near the lake that you could occupy. A small creek had formed from the water that overflowed from the lake due to the rains.
This is a small lake named after the hamlet it is situated in. The lake itself is small and a lazy coracle ride on the lake makes good sense. The coracle oarsman will give you a high speed rotation, going round and round which will make your head spin. The lake is calm and serene with green surrounding. Forest department provides coracle ride for Rs. 75 per person. Further up the lake is the Govt. run rabbit and sheep farm which is worth a visit.
Not many shops nearby, though a small tea stall offers the basic tea and biscuits. Be prepared and carry all your essentials along. Also be ready for the surprise visit by the rains. The roads are well maintained though you may get occasional surprise of potholes. Also there are quite a few blind spots so drive carefully. Once you reach the lake you have option to walk for 500 meters from road to mouth of Lake (there is an entry fees) or take horse ride.
Options for accommodations are not many. The Camper’s club is said to be the only option for staying nearby which offers basic accommodation. Contact No: +91- 9444477358. Tip: Go with packed food and a bed sheet and you can have a picnic. Ensure you don't litter and dispose waste in proper place.
