Kothandarameswarar
Temple is one of the ancient temples of Kayatharu in Thoothukudi District, the
place which is considered as the Pearl City of South India. The Shiva Temple is
the most prominent Temple at Kayathar. This temple is about 1000 years old and
is a temple of great importance. This Shiva Temple is located about 300 meters
towards the North East of Kayathar Bus Stand.
This
temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kothandarameswarar and Mother Shakti as Akilandeswari.
The famous about Kothandarameswarar Temple is "Pradosham Pooja" which
is famous among the Kayatharu, Thoothukudi region. The main festival of
Kothandarameswarar Temple is at month of Chitra & Tamil New Year which is
most famous among the Thoothukudi region. The Moolavar was worshiped by Vishnu.

Shiva is worshipped here as Kothandarameswarar and Lord Shiva's consort is worshipped
here as Arultharum Akilandeswari. Lord Murugan and Lord Vinayagar are also
worshipped at this temple. It is believed that Lord Vishnu had worshiped Lord
Shiva here and has become a part of this Lord by dissolving himself in the
Lingam.
