Bryant Park, Kodaikanal

Bryant Park, Kodaikanal
Bryant Park, a botanical garden, is situated on the eastern side of 'The Lake'. Conceived and landscaped in 1980 by a British Army Officer, Glenn Bryant. At this botanical garden, every year in the month of May, an annual flower and vegetable show is organized. In addition, it is one of the most visited attractions during the summer months. The garden also houses a glasshouse, which comprises a wide assortment of flowers, ferns and other ornamental plants.

Bryant Park is located just east of the lake and 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus stand, is a wonderfully maintained 20.5 acres (8.3 ha) botanical garden. The park was planned and built in 1908 by a forest officer from Madurai, H.D.Bryant, and named after him. With 325 species of trees, shrubs and cacti, the park is a rainbow of stunning flowers during the peak season.

A large section is dedicated to nearly 740 varieties of roses. There is an 1857 Eucalyptus tree and a Bodhi tree which adds a religious significance to the park. Ornamental plants are cultivated in a nursery for sale. The park organizes horticultural exhibits and flower shows every summer, to coincide with the peak season. The entrance fee to the park is nominal, and it is open all year.

Bryant Park is surprisingly well maintained for a big park. It has a bewildering variety of flowers, all of which add to the surreal experience of the park. Ideal for kids too, just make sure they don’t get carried away plucking those prized buds. Spend some quality time with family and friends and just ignore the crowds. After all, Bryant Park is the celebrity in town.
