Ugamkondeshwarar Temple, Vilambur, Chengalpattu

Ugamkondeshwarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Vilambur Village near Edaikazhinadu Town in Cheyyur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Ugamkondeshwarar and Mother is called as Tirupura Sundari. The Temple is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal.


Legends

As per legend, Lord Shiva is said to have been in this place for many Yugas. Hence, Lord Shiva came to be called as Ugamkondeshwarar.

History

The Temple is believed to be around 1000 years old. The ancient temple is completely lost except the Lingam.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east and situated on the seashore. The Temple consists of sanctum and mukha mandapam. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Ugamkondeshwarar, in the form of Lingam. The sanctum is covered with sheet roof and mukha mandapam is covered with thatched roof. Nandi, housed in the sheet roof, can be seen facing towards the sanctum.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Vilambur Bus Stop, 5 Kms from Kadapakkam Bus Stop, 9 Kms from Cheyyur, 21 Kms from Marakkanam, 33 Kms from Melmaruvathur, 37 Kms from Melmaruvathur Railway Station, 50 Kms from Puducherry, 49 Kms from Tindivanam, 60 Kms from Chengalpattu, 100 Kms from Chennai Airport and 105 Kms from Chennai. Vilambur is situated on ECR road connecting Chennai and Puducherry. Buses connecting Chennai and Puducherry on ECR stops at Kadapakkam Bus Stop. Autos can be hired from this Bus Stop to reach this temple.
