Makara Nedunkuzhaikathar Temple, Thenthiruperai, Thoothukudi

Makara Nedunkuzhaikathar Temple, Thenthiruperai, Thoothukudi
Makara Nedunkuzhaikathar Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi, nine Hindu temples dedicated to Vishnu located in Thiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, Tamilnadu, India in the southern bank of Thamiraparani river. It is located 5 km from Alwar Thirunagari. All these 9 temples are classified as Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. The temple is referred to as Sukra sthalam, a location for the planet deity, Sukra.

Being one of the 108 Divya Desas of Perumal, Thenthiruperai temple is of Venus-Shukra importance ranking 7 in the Navagraha family. It is located 3 kms North East of Thiru Kolur off the Tirunelveli – Thiruchendur highway. In this temple, Bhoodevi takes the form and colour of Sridevi.

There are nine sacred shrines in this Pandya region equal to those in the Chola region attributed to nine planets. As Lord Vishnu himself is acting as the nine planets in these places, there are no separate shrines for the Navagrahas the nine planets. Those facing any adverse aspect of a planet are advised to visit the Nava – nine Tirupathis for relief.

It would be difficult to catch buses for each such place causing more days to complete this pilgrimage. A cab can be hired to visit the places for completing the tour in a day. Those in Chennai can avail the services of Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation which is arranging the trip twice a month on the first and third Friday of the month. They can return by Wednesday morning. The Nava Tirupathis are related with the nine planets as Perumal himself is the planet of the particular place.

History
The Pandiyan Kingdom was hit by a heavy drought in the twelfth century. The saints and well-wishers of the kingdom advised the Pandyan King, Koon Pandiyan to make a settlement of One hundred and eight Vaishnavaite families on the banks of river Thamiraparani. Thus Vaishnavaite families from various villages north and south of the Cauvery River were made to settle here thus forming the core of the village.
