Legends
According to Hindu mythology, this place was a forest and saint Vidangar pray doing penance on lord Kasi Viswanathar. Due to some interruption, Lord Kasiviswanathar send Vaduga Bairavar (one form of lord Shiva) to safeguard saint Vidangar. His penance continued for longer period and as a result of it, ant hills started covering saint Vidangar and Vaduga Bairavar. Ant hills completely isolated them from outside world.

Vaaniga chettiar's (A trading section of people) are doing pepper trading with Pandiyas and Chera’s. When the trading people of Vaaniga Chettiar were crossing this forest, Vaduga Bairavar enacts a play with them. Vaduga Bairavar turns as an old Brahmin and request the traders, he wanted pepper for his cough illness. The traders told, to that old Brahmin it is green gram.

When the traders reach Madurai, the pepper bags were turned as green gram. The king ordered to penalize the traders. At that time lord vaduganathar told in the air, “I am the one who changed the product". On hearing this, the king asked to lord, if it is true, you will cure my son and daughters who are disabled and dumb.

Lord Vaduga Bairavar replied to king, "You come to the forest and see the saint Vidangar and Vaduga Bairavar's and pray them, you will be fulfilled your demands". The king then came and prayed to the saint and lord Vaduga Bairavar and built a temple for Bairavar, vidangeswarar, goddess Visalakshi and Somaskandar.
