Saptharishiswarar Temple, Ammachatram, Thanjavur
Saptharishiswarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located at Ammachatram, around 5 km from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu. The temple deity is known as Lord Saptharishiswarar and the Goddess as Gnanambikai. However, the temple is famous for its Kala Bhairava Sannidhi. The temple is located in Kumbakonam - Mayavaram bus route.
The significance of the Saptharishiswarar Temple is that the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages) have worshiped Mahadeva here and arranged marriage for the Lord.
Ammachatram Shiva Temple was built by Chola Kings and is currently maintained by Thanjavur Palace. The temple has Five Shivalingams, including the Moolavar. The main Shivalinga was worshiped by the Sapta Rishis. The other Shivalinga was installed by King Ravana for worship on his way back from Kailash to Lanka after obtaining a boon from Mahadeva.
Worshiping Goddess Gnanambikai of the temple is believed to bring brilliance and stability to withstand the karmas in life.
The temple has separate shrines for Lord Vinayakar, Dhakshinamurthy, Murugan, Mahalakshmi, Lingothbhavar, Vishnu, Durga, Chandikeshwarar, Kalabairavar, Saneeswarar, Sooriyan and Chandira (Chandra).
Saptharishiswarar Bhairavar Temple features two stala vritchams (temple trees) one is Vilva tree and another one is Jackfruit tree.
Reference about Saptharishiswarar Temple can be seen in Bavishyaotta Purana which mentions this place similar to Kasi (Varanasi) to attain Moksha due to the presence of Kalabairavar.

Temple is open from 7 AM to 11 AM and in the evening from 4 PM to 8 PM.
Poojas & Festivals
Ashtami days are considered important to worship Lord Bhairava in the temple. Special poojas are offered on this day. The Full moon Ashtami pooja for Kalabairavar is very popular and is believed to get great power of solving the problems and giving remedies to life.
