Pazhampathi Nathar Temple, Thiruppunavasal, Pudukottai

Pazhampathi Nathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruppunavasal in Avudaiyar Koil Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is also called as Vriddhapureeswarar Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Vruddha Pureeswarar / Pazhampathi Nathar / Mahalingeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayaki / Brihannayagi / Karunai Nayagi / Kachini Mulai Ammai. The temple is situated on the banks of Pambar River.





The temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva Sthalams) glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar and Appar. This temple is considered as 251st Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 7th sthalam in Pandya Nadu. Lord Muruga in the temple is praised in the Thirupugazh hymns of saint Arunagirinathar.

History

It is believed that Pandyan King Sundara Pandya built this temple combining the tradition of both Pandyas and the Cholas. There are about 5 inscriptions dated to Pandya period. Lord is mentioned as Thirupunalvasaludaiya Nayanar. Kanchi Mahaperiyava had visited this temple several times.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

Festivals

11 days Vaikasi Visakam (May-June) is grandly celebrated in the temple. Monthly Pradoshams are also observed here.

Prayers

This Temple is considered as Parihara Sthalam for Chevvai (Mars). People with Chevvai Dosham frequent this Temple and offer prayers here. Those celebrating the Valaikappu (Seemantham) for the pregnant women, offer the first bangle to the Goddess Kali. It is noteworthy, till today there is no single maternity hospital in places around the temple. Their faith is so deep that by the grace of Kali, the delivery would safely occur in their respective house itself. People worship Lord Shiva here will be relieved from all their sins and attain Jeevan Mukthi.

The Temple is located at about 300 meters from Thiruppunavasal Bus Stand, 21 Kms from Thiruvadanai, 31 Kms from Avudaiyar Kovil, 43 Kms from Aranthangi Railway Station, 54 Kms from Karaikudi, 77 Kms from Pudukkottai and 125 Kms from Madurai Airport. Those going to Thiruppunavasal from Chennai should reach Pudukottai via Trichy and then reach Aranthangi. Buses are available here to reach Thiruppunavasal. Those going from Madurai should reach Aranthangi via Karaikudi and then reach Thiruppunavasal. Bus facilities are conveniently available. Buses are available from Avudaiyar Koil, Aranthangi and Thiruvadanai.
